This program is recognized by the CHIMA (Canadian Health Information Management Association) and the AGISQ (Association des Gestionnaires de l'information de santé du Québec)

This recognition gives students the opportunity to write the CHIMA exams in order to be able to work throughout Canada.

This three year specialization program leads to a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DCS) and provides the student with the skills and knowledge to effectively manage the health information required for patient care, administration, research and education.

This program is designed to train you for the specialized techniques required in health information management and offers a unique combination of medical, computer, and business courses. Emphasis during the program will be on medical records techniques, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical coding, computerization and statistical analysis.

What does the medical records program entail?

A medical records technician manages the information contained in the patient’s medical records and ensures the confidentiality of this information. Depending on the work environment, a medical records technician’s duties may be quite varied. These duties include:

  • Ensuring that all medical records are complete
  • Coding illnesses and treatments
  • Generating statistics from medical records data
  • Applying the Access to Information Act and the Act respecting health services and social services that pertain to all medical records
  • Cooperating with researchers in regard to epidemiological studies
  • Representing the institution in courts of law

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF FRENCH IS REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THIS PROGRAM OF STUDY BECAUSE CERTAIN TEXTBOOKS & SOFTWARE ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IN FRENCH.

Careers, sectors of employment, internship and activities

The program includes two internships during the Fall and Winter semesters of the student’s last year of study:
13 weeks in a hospital centre and 2 weeks in a local community service centre (CLSC) or other service.

The student shadow program, which takes place in the first year of study, gives students the opportunity to observe professionals during their workday.

Students also have the opportunity to acquire experience during the summer months through our placement service.
